This cabochon was cut from a larger piece of Polychrome Jasper, also known as Desert Jasper. It is a variety of Jasper that was discovered in Madagascar. The distinct shades of brown, red, and tan are caused from iron inclusions into the base microquartz.  It is a hard stone that takes a good polish.
